In December 2021, Brittany, a dedicated PICU nurse, returned to work after a three-month maternity leave. Her second shift back was devastating: a liver transplant patient coded twice. The emotional toll was so overwhelming that Brittany’s mother had to pick her up from work because she was too distraught to drive.

But the challenges didn’t end there. Later that morning, Brittany’s newborn son fell seriously ill. Over the course of the day, his condition deteriorated rapidly. After more than ten hours in the ER, Brittany received the heartbreaking news: her baby was suffering from a brain bleed. The diagnosis later revealed a rare liver disease called PFIC or Progressive Familial Intrahepatic Cholestasis.

Brittany’s story highlights the unique challenges faced by healthcare professionals, particularly those working in high-stress environments like pediatric intensive care units. Her experience as both a nurse and a parent of a critically ill child provides a powerful perspective on the emotional demands of the job.
